SINGAPORE — The Vietnamese delegation to the 29 th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Singapore, led by National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, have contributed to increasing solidarity and co-operation among ASEAN countries and boosting friendship and mutual understanding.

Vice Chairwoman Phong attended the Executive Committee’s meeting and delivered a speech at the plenary session of the General Assembly, affirming Viet Nam’s consistent policy to actively and responsibly participate in AIPA’s activities, thus contributing to peacekeeping for co-operation and sustainable development in the region and the world at large.

The Vietnamese NA leader also held separate meetings with top legislators of Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, China, Russia, Indonesia and Canada.

The General Assembly passed six resolutions proposed by Vietnamese legislators, relating to food security, energy security and substitution energy, AIPA’s role and contribution to the ASEAN Chapter, co-operation among ASEAN parliaments in improving knowledge for people-elected delegates, sustainable environment and climate changes, and co-operation among female MPs in political, economic and social activities.

The General Assembly applauded Viet Nam’s initiative on organising a seminar aiming to improving knowledge and capacity of people-elected MPs by late 2008 and a meeting on strengthening the role of female MPs in legislative activities by late 2009 . — VNA/VNS
